What is a Dental Filling?

Dental fillings are restorative treatments used to repair teeth affected by cavities, cracks, or minor fractures. By sealing and rebuilding the damaged area, fillings restore the tooth’s shape, strength, and appearance while helping to prevent further decay. This preserves your natural tooth and supports long-term oral health.

There are several types of fillings, each with its own benefits. Amalgam fillings are strong and affordable, though they don’t blend with natural tooth color. Composite resin fillings provide a more natural, tooth-colored look but may not last as long as metal options. Ceramic fillings offer durability and aesthetics, while gold fillings are highly durable but generally more costly.

about service

The Dental Filling Procedure

  1. Examination – The dentist carefully examines your teeth, sometimes using X-rays, to detect decay or damage. A treatment plan is then explained, and any questions you have are answered.
  2. Tooth Preparation – Local anesthesia is applied to numb the area. The decayed or damaged part of the tooth is gently removed with a dental drill or laser.
  3. Filling Placement – The cleaned space is filled with a suitable material such as composite resin (tooth-colored) or amalgam (silver-colored), depending on your needs.
  4. Polishing and Adjustment – The dentist shapes and polishes the filling, ensuring it feels comfortable, fits your bite correctly, and blends naturally with your tooth.

When Do You Need a Dental Filling?

  • Tooth decay or cavities – Fillings stop decay from spreading, protecting your tooth from further damage.

  • Cracked or chipped teeth – A filling can restore the tooth’s shape and prevent bacteria from entering.

  • Worn-down teeth – Teeth that have been worn from grinding (bruxism) or other habits can be rebuilt with fillings.

  • Tooth sensitivity – If enamel has worn away, fillings can cover exposed areas and reduce discomfort

Types of Dental Fillings

  • Composite resin – Tooth-colored, natural appearance

  • Amalgam – Strong and durable, often used for back teeth

  • Ceramic – Aesthetic and long-lasting, but higher in cost

  • Gold – Very durable and biocompatible, but more expensive
