What Is Gum Therapy?

Gum Therapy is a specialized area of dentistry focused on preventing, diagnosing, and treating gum disease and other conditions that affect the supporting structures of the teeth. In simpler terms, it’s often referred to as periodontics.

Gum disease usually begins with gingivitis, which causes redness, swelling, and bleeding of the gums. If left untreated, it can progress to more serious forms like periodontal disease, which may lead to gum recession, bone loss, and eventually tooth loss.

Periodontic (gum therapy) treatment focuses on removing plaque and tartar, reducing inflammation, and restoring the health of your gums and supporting bone. At our clinic, we offer comprehensive periodontal care to help you protect your teeth, maintain healthy gums, and prevent future issues.

about service

4 Common Signs of Gum Disease
(Periodontal Disease)

  1. Red, Swollen, or Tender Gums
Gums that appear inflamed or feel sore are often an early sign of periodontal disease.
  2. Bleeding While Brushing or Flossing
If your gums bleed easily during your oral care routine, it could indicate the presence of gum disease.
  3. Persistent Bad Breath
Ongoing bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth may result from bacterial buildup associated with gum disease.
  4. Receding Gums or Loose Teeth
Gums pulling away from the teeth, or teeth that feel loose, are signs of advanced periodontal disease.

4 Stages of Periodontal Disease

  1. Gingivitis
The earliest and mildest stage, marked by gum inflammation and bleeding. At this stage, gum disease  is reversible with proper care.

  2. Early Periodontitis
Inflammation spreads below the gumline, causing slight bone loss and deeper gum pockets. Gum disease (periodontal disease) begins to affect the supporting bone.

  3. Moderate Periodontitis
More severe bone loss, increased tooth mobility, and deeper pockets develop. At this stage, gum disease (periodontal disease) requires professional intervention.

  4. Advanced Periodontitis
Significant bone loss, loose or shifting teeth, and possible tooth loss occur. Gum disease (periodontal disease) at this stage can severely impact oral health and overall well-being.

How to Maintain Healthy Gums & Prevent Gum Disease?

  • Brush twice a day with a soft-bristle toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste

  • Floss daily to remove plaque between teeth and below the gumline

  • Visit your dentist regularly for cleanings and check-ups

  • Avoid smoking, as it increases the risk of periodontal disease.

  • Eat a balanced diet to support overall oral health

How Gum Disease Is Treated?

  • Professional Deep Cleaning (Scaling and Root Planing)
Removes plaque and tartar buildup from below the gumline to help gums reattach to the teeth.

  • Antibacterial Medications
Topical or oral antibiotics may be used to reduce infection and inflammation caused by gum disease.

  • Laser Therapy
Advanced techniques like laser treatment can target diseased tissue with less discomfort and faster healing.

  • Surgical Treatment (if needed)
In advanced cases, surgical procedures like flap surgery or bone grafting may be necessary to restore gum and bone health.
